Merchant of Death
Merchant of Death
In Merchant of Death, Douglas Farah and Stephan Braun tell the true story of Viktor Bout, a young Russian intelligence officer who, since the end of the Cold War, has redefined how wars are fought in much of the developing world. By gaining access to unguarded weapons arsenals and a fleet of several dozen aircraft, Bout became a one-stop shopping service for all sides in many wars, from Afghanistan, where he armed the Norther Alliance and the Taliban, to the jungles of Colombia and the diamond-rich regions of West Africa. The human cost of the illicit weapons trafficking has been enormous, enabling criminal and terrorist groups to achieve new levels of violence and destruction. The national security cost has also been high, enabling a sometime-ally to enrich his coffers in order to develop new lines of business into Somalia, Lebanon and Nigeria, where he arms those seeking to destabilize entire regions and plot against the United States.

Afghan prisoner torture
Afghan prisoner torture
Hey, it's a little Enhanced Interrogation. Canada complicate in the torture of Afghan prisoners. This is from a senior diplomat who was there and has nothing to gain but a lot to loose by coming forth, incidentally the name whistle blower seems demeaning to someone who has the courage to stand up for the country and what Canada is supposed to stand for. I am not surprised by these charges nor do I question their validity and by the end of Canadas involvement in the war in Afghanistan there will be many more truths revealed that will have Canadians questioning our Government and what it stands for. I believe the stories that are leaking from sources that the Canadian Government has paid millions of dollars in Afghanistan to insurgent, Taliban and possibly even war/drug lords not to attack outposts. The politicians play games as they jockey for position and it doesnt matter if its Conservatives or Liberals, its Party politics as usual and Canadians come last. We have lost faith and trust in our parliament and its ability to govern, we are disconnected as less and less people vote, whats the difference, they are all the same and that is what they count on so they can perpetuate the power grab. No more, the BS has to stop, they must be held accountable, and we wouldnt let any merchant get away with what we let the politicians get away with. I love Canada and I will voice my opposition to the act by politicians that soil our image abroad and demoralize us at home. I just heard ...

Drugs, Thugs, and Cash
Drugs, Thugs, and Cash
Over 90% of the world's heroin comes from Afghanistan, and 60% of Afghanistan's GDP comes from poppy trade. With nearly 70000 American troops set to be in Afghanistan by the summer, most in the poppy-infested south and east of the country, the linkages between drugs and militant financing are more in the spotlight than ever. Emmy-nominated former Associated Press and ABC News reporter Gretchen Peters spent five years traveling to the deepest reaches of the treacherous border between Pakistan and Afghanistan to research her "stunning" new book, Seeds of Terror: How Heroin is Bankrolling the Taliban and al Qaeda. Join us as Peters and Douglas Farah, author of a critically acclaimed book on the international weapons trade, Merchant of Death: Money, Guns, Planes, and the Man Who Makes War Possible, discuss the region's narcotics trade, precariously placed at ground zero in the "war on terror", and the relationship between Afghan drugs, thugs, and money.

UAE Torture tape trial verdict
UAE Torture tape trial verdict
Shaikh Eisa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been acquitted of assaulting an Afghan merchant after the Al Ain Court of First Instance found him not responsible for his actions which were videotaped and put on the internet last year. The court also cleared Shaikh Eisa of endangering the life of the Afghan merchant, MS, and of sexually abusing him with a stick. The jury also granted MS Dh10,000 in temporary compensation against libel damages which he claimed he incurred after two American brothers posted the videotape on the internet. The merchant had sued the American brothers, GN and BN, for libel and claimed Dh100,000 in temporary compensation. The brothers were sentenced to five years in jail each after the court convicted them of possessing drugs to carry out a criminal act, endangering the life of Shaikh Eisa (they mixed the drug with his drink and served it to him), defamed and insulted Shaikh Eisa by broadcasting what the bill of charges termed as "slanderous videotape".

War heroes song - Inspiring military memorial music. New instrumental music for popular song. Report from THE AGE newspaper online - 21st June 2010: Three Australian soldiers have been killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, just a fortnight after two other diggers died in a roadside bomb blast in the war torn country. Ten were on board the chopper, Defence Chief Air Marshal Angus Houston told reporters. The soldiers are attached to the Special Operations Task Group and there are "a number of casualties", the department said in a statement. Private Ben Chuck, Private Timothy Aplin, and Private Scott Palmer, were killed when the helicopter they were on crashed on its way to a mission south of the Australian base at Tarin Kowt. They were part of the Special Operations Task Group drawn from the Sydney-based 2nd Commando Regiment. The three commandos had been to Afghanistan on previous tours. Seven other Australian soldiers were injured in the crash and two remain in intensive care. The deaths bring Australia's casualty toll in Afghanistan to 16 since 2001. 'Can You Hear Australia's Heroes Marching?' is a national war memorial song and a tribute to the ANZAC spirit of mateship, courage and sacrifice. The heroes song was created from Peter's experience in visiting the Adelaide River War Cemetery (114 kms south of Darwin) in the Northern Territory and seeing the graves of Australians who gave their lives in the service and defence of their country. Russian Arms Suspect Files Petition
Russian Arms Suspect Files Petition
WONG: A suspected arms dealer is behind bars in Thailand today. US prosecutors say Viktor Bout has been trafficking arms since the 1990s and the media has dubbed him the "Merchant of Death." But Bout says he was merely a businessman involved in the aviation industry. Bout has been in a Thai prison for a year after being arrested when he arrived in Bangkok from Moscow. Bout filed a petition to the Thai court, saying he was illegally detained by Thai and American officials. According to the United Nations and the US Treasury, Bout has sold or brokered arms that have helped fuel wars in Afghanistan, Angola, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Sudan. If the court finds ground for his petition, he will be released.

World's Biggest-Ever Arms Dealer?
World's Biggest-Ever Arms Dealer?
Viktor Bout ("The Merchant of Death") is claimed to be the biggest arms trafficker in history. He's now locked up Thailand. He's allegedly supplied arms to Groups all over the world including Marxist guerillas in Colombia, Al-CIAda and The Taliban. He is best friends Jean-Pierra Bemba (a Congolese former rebel leader now awaiting trial by the ICC on counts crimes against humanity and war crimes). But why are the USA and Russia so eager to get this guy extradited to their countries? Probably something to do with the fact that he also worked for them? This is a great little news item that peeks into the seedy world of the International Arms Trade which helps to flood Africa (and elsewhere) with lethal killing technology. Webster Griffin Tarpley Part 15 -5th of November 2007 London
World War 2, 1939-1945: A U-boat torpedo hit the ocean liner Athenia near Britain with some 1100 passengers, of which 311 were Americans. The sea was calm and only 118 people on board lost their lives. The ship was sunk because it behaved like a military transport, blackened out and zigzagging. This incident wasn't enough to precipitate war, and the Germans also refused to be provoked by several American acts of war. Americans confiscated German merchant ships, and Americans started to support the British with various lend-lease items, US volunteer pilots joined the RAF and some RAF pilots were trained in the US, US gave the British 50 old but usable WW1 destroyers and 20 modern torpedo boats, tanks, light bombers, fighter aircraft like P-40s and so on. American destroyers also escorted the convoys bound to Britain, and attacked German U-boats even far away from those convoys. The US did not maintain a neutral stance attitude towards the warring nations. The US naval intelligence, chief of Japan desk planned and suggested "8 insults", which should bring Japan into war with the US. President Roosevelt executed this plan immediately and also added some other insults, enraging the Japan. The most serious one was a total blockade of Japanese oil imports, as agreed between the Americans, British and the Dutch. FDR also declared an all-out embargo against the Japan and forbade them the use of Panama canal, impeding Japan's access to Venezuelan oil. The Flying Tigers volunteer ...

Fears for missing passengers as boat sinks off Western Australian coast in Indian Ocean (part 1/2)
Fears for missing passengers as boat sinks off Western Australian coast in Indian Ocean (part 1/2)
More than 20 people were feared dead on Monday after a boat carrying about 40 sank in rough seas far off northwest Australia during a rescue attempt by a passing merchant ship and fishing vessel. Defence chief Angus Houston said the unidentified boat capsized and then sank after the LNG Pioneer ship and Taiwanese fishing craft responded to pleas for help in a remote area off Australia's Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean. It was not confirmed whether the boat was one of dozens of people-smuggling vessels that have headed to Australia this year carrying more than 1700 asylum-seekers, many of them from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. "I understand when the first ship got there, this vessel was still intact," Houston said. "Somehow or other during the process of interaction between the ship and trawler and also the stricken vessel, there's been a capsize and people ended up in the water." Some 17 people were rescued by scrambling aboard life-rafts thrown out by the LNG Pioneer, which was sailing to Western Australia when it diverted course to help the stricken boat. A maritime safety official said there were "grave concerns" for the missing, while Prime Minister Kevin Rudd warned that finding more survivors would be difficult. "Our assets have been deployed, we have co-ordinated with other vessels in the area. This is a very difficult search environment," Rudd told reporters..... www.channelnewsasia.com There are grave concerns for up to 20 people missing after a boat capsized ...

Was he the Worlds Greatest Overland Explorer or the Biggest Liar? Perhaps no land journey in human history is more famous than Marco Polos legendary 24-year trek across Asia. But was it all just a big lie? As described in his 1299 book, The Description of the World, the peripatetic Venetian merchant encountered such wonders as the singing sand dunes of Dunhuang, China, mountains of salt in present-day Afghanistan, and the glories of the Mongol court of Kublai Khan. Generations of Europeans were spellbound by Polos account, yet in recent years some scholars have questioned its authenticity. For an extensive three part series in National Geographic, veteran photographer Michael Yamashita put the famed Venetians reputation to the ultimate test using Polos own book as his travel guide for a journey in the celebrated explorers footsteps. Yamashita retraced Polos route across ten countries, from Venice through restricted areas in Iraq and war zones in Afghanistan, over the old Silk Road into China and back again by way of Southeast Asia and India. Along the way he encountered many landmarks and peoples documented in Polos book, deepening his conviction that Polos account is indeed authentic. Peace Deal Quashed, Pakistan Warns: Flee
Peace Deal Quashed, Pakistan Warns: Flee
May 5 Harry Smith spoke with Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Lara Logan about President Obama's planned meeting with Afghan and Pakistan leaders. CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent Lara Logan says Mr. Obama will stress how Pakistan's efforts to achieve peace with the Taliban are failing. "The biggest difference of opinion between the US's position and the Pakistanis' is that some kind of peace deal is still the way to go - negotiating with these people, avoiding high civilian casualties, etc. That clearly is not working," Logan told CBS Early Show anchor Harry Smith. Khushal Khan, the top administrator in Swat, said Taliban militants were roaming the area and laying mines. A witness in Mingora told an Associated Press reporter that black-turbaned militants were deployed on most streets and on high buildings, and security forces were barricaded in their bases. Another reported heavy gunfire for much of the day. Both asked for anonymity out of fear for their life. Khan said the militants were in control of "90 percent" of the valley and said they were responding to army violations of the peace deal — citing attacking insurgents and boosting troop numbers. He accused the government of caving to US pressure. Pakistan agreed to a truce in the Swat Valley and surrounding districts in February after two years of fighting with militants in the former tourist resort. It formally introduced Islamic law last month in the hope that insurgents would lay down their arms ...
